Epithet Erased (sometimes referred to as just Epithet or Epithet: Erased) is an ensemble comedy/adventure cartoon series created in partnership between VRV and Brendan Blaber, creator of the So This is Basically... and Welcome to... series under the username JelloApocalypse. The show is a loose adaptation of Brendan's Roll20 Tabletop RPG campaign Anime Campaign, it's produced in a Limited Animation style similar to Brendan's aforementioned web-series—excluding a few fully-animated sequences such as the opening, which are produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios—with numerous RPG elements stylistically sprinkled in.

The series is stated to be broken up into multiple story arcs, each spotlighting different members of its gradually increasing cast while tying into a larger plot. The first episode premiered on VRV on November 8, 2019, with subsequent episodes premiering every Friday. Episodes are also made available on Brendan's YouTube channel two weeks after their premiere on VRV.

Synopsis

Season 1

In the world of Sweet Jazz City a lucky few are born with powers attached to their very souls known as "Epithets". An Epithet stems from a single word that can grant its user any kind of power. Words like "Fire", "Coupon"... or "Soup". A magical artifact known as the "Arsene Amulet" is rumored to be able to steal an epithet from a person, and they say it’s hidden somewhere in the Sweet Jazz Museum... Thieves burst down the doors in the middle of the night! Inscribed warriors do battle in the dark of the abandoned exhibits! Dinosaur bones come toppling to the floor! And a little girl named Molly is trapped in the middle of it all. Will her epithet, "Dumb" be enough to save her? Or will her epithet be... erased?

The Epithet Erased Novels are a series of Novels continuing or adapting the story of Epithet Erased. the first of which is, Prison of Plastic.

Development

Concept and Creation

The concept of "epithets" were originally introduced in Brendan's Roll20 Tabletop RPG campaign Anime Campaign, and since he liked the concept so much, he decided to carry over many of the elements and characters to Epithet Erased with slight changes.

Production

Brendan began drafting the script for Epithet Erased as early as Fall of 2018, and pitched it to VRV in October of the same year. Official production is estimated to have begun sometime between March and May of 2019, where the series was developed and produced up until the airing of episode 7 on VRV, on December 20th, 2019.

Trivia

  • While the series was in production, Brendan Blaber referred to the series by the pseudonym "Sugar Cookie Jazz," as he was unable to reveal the actual name due to being under a non-disclosure agreement. [1]
    • The earliest public mention of the series using this name was in a post on Brendan's social media advertising for show artists to be hired. [2]
  • There is a possibility for an Indiegogo for Season 2 onward.[3]
    • Season 2 would cost around $550K. It would be 8-9 episodes.[4][5]
    • There was a Kickstarter for the book continuation, Prison of Plastic.[5]
  • Epithet’s world doesn’t speak English. It speaks a sort of magic Esperanto-type language that combined all the languages that used to exist in the Epithet world into one, so there are way more words than just for one language.[6]
  • At least one character that is planned will discover their epithet mid-series.[6]
  • At least one character that we have met so far has unlocked their epithet using an Epitome.[6]
  • Plasterbrain, the show's music composer, has released the soundtrack for season 1 on her bandcamp and soundcloud pages.
  • Each character has their epithet chosen by a randomizer except for Zora. [7]
  • Brendan had to remake all of the characters' stats from scratch due to the old system not having any science sense. [8]
  • An official Rulebook for an Epithet Erased TTRPG will be produced at the Stretch Goal of $330K on the Prison of Plastic Kickstarter.[5]
  • On Sound Candence Studios' website, Epithet Erased and Prison of Plastic are listed as being by "Scrubbadubs", and on Wikipedia it is listed as being by "Scrubba dubs"
  • After almost 2 years, a poster for season 1 is hung up in the Sound Candence Studios.[9]
  • The Eyecatchers are inspired by Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Bomberman Jetters,[10]
  • Basically every sprite is based off of Jello posing like cartoon characters.[11]
  • One of the main rules for production is to have sprites rotate on an off screen axis instead of the center of the sprite.[12]
