the cowboys or cowgirls, were the people guarding the gold and dye mines of the upper taiga country. To camoflauge themselves against the tundra they would wear white. Then when they tried to steal territory from each other they would mark each other with black dye. And when combined with the white clothing the black spots made them look like cows, derriving the name: "cowboy".
